Dog Training Philosophy
Do not use treats! Use verbal praise and affection instead!
Imagine your unleashed dog running out your front door to say hello to your friendly neighbor who always has dog treats in her pocket for her neighborhood walks. Meanwhile, a speeding car races down your street! You shout, “Buddy, come now!” Buddy immediately stops running and returns to you! Whew! That was a close call. If Buddy listened and you gave him a treat, you would actually be rewarding him for escaping from your house and then returning! I believe treats can be useful as positive reinforcement for potty training and some puppy behavior, but I so often see treats used to reward bad behavior! That is something I do not encourage.
I am a strong believer in a balanced scale when training a dog to behave. A balanced scale involves PRAISE, MOTIVATION, and CORRECTION. Dogs thrive on praise from their owners and live to please them. Your loving, happy voice motivates them better than anything else! Verbal and physical praise instead of treats will give your dog the affection and love they deserve when they behave obediently. In turn, a stern voice reminds them that you are in charge and are giving a correction. In addition, I use a training collar, also known as a chain collar. It is used as a loose chain; it is not to be misused for choking. When used properly, chain collars provide a way to safely and securely direct your dog’s attention toward you and into proper heel position.
Dog Training Sessions
Training Sessions are to take place at your home or location you desire. A 15 minute consultation first appointment is available to all new clients to discuss your dog’s behavioral challenges and training goals. After the consultation, you may decide to have a training session right away or wait and schedule a training session later.
At our first session, I will work independently one on one with your dog in a quiet area in your home or location. This is because dogs can easily be distracted by their owner’s presence or activities. I need to have your dog’s undivided attention for 15 minutes. After our 15 minute session, I will bring the owner back into the room to demonstrate what we worked on and help the owner implement the new command. I want to make sure you are comfortable and confident because it will be your partnership that helps brings real results!
Your dog WILL and CAN learn the following basic commands:
Heel, Sit, Down, Stay, Come, Place, No, Off, and Release Word
In addition, your dog can learn hand signals! These are all base commands to some behavioral challenges you may be experiencing.
Jumping on people or counters? Play biting? Barking at strangers? Selective hearing? Pulling on the leash? Manners in general? Just like children, dogs need help learning acceptable and appropriate behavior.
Your love for your dog is your motivating force to seek help with training; your dog’s love for you will motivate him to learn and bring great joy! A happy dog is a well behaved dog!
